Let's play ball! The Tampa Bay Rays, based in St. Petersburg, open their season next week against the Baltimore Orioles. They meet the Yankees the following week, which, according to insiders will be a key early season meet-up. By the way, the Yankees have Spring training in Tampa.
I snapped this picture at Tropicana Field (a domed stadium, making it a great place to see a baseball game in the hot, muggy and buggy days of summer in Florida) at the last Spring training game for the Rays. They pulled a 4-2 win over the New York Mets.

They say about the weather around St. Petersburg, that if you don't like it, just wait 5 minutes. Well, over the last few days, those 5 minutes have turned into 5 days seems like. There have been several cloudy days in a row, and the latest weather report said that this winter may continue the pattern of "several cloudy days" in a row. Not really anything to complain about, unless you've come from up north to get away from the dreariness. Even so, the beach is still a beautiful place and there are still moments when the sun breaks through the clouds.

This is the view of Accents by Josie just as you get into this tastefully arranged shop at 531 Central Avenue. I had the opportunity to talk with the owner and her daughter as I browsed the 50% off sale of everything in the store...jewelry, dinner table accents, decorations, and the outfits to go with them...perfect for Christmas shopping.
As some might be aware, the Central Avenue corridor near Tropicana Field (home of the Tampa Bay Rays) has been an ongoing topic of discussion. Unfortunately, the area did not boom as was hoped when the stadium was built. Josie has had her shop at this location for 6 years and has seen businesses around her gradually dry up, which is easy to see by looking at the buildings just across the street. Her daughter believes that walk-in traffice could improve if the city would do some improvements to Central in that corrider between 4th Street and Tropicana Field...a simple one being to improve the lighting on the street.
In the current state of the economy, Josie has had to cut back her sales staff, but, she optimistically states, "At least we're surviving, and that's saying something these days."
Oh, and I did purchase 2 nice little bracelets...a beaded one for me and one in a vintage style for my mom. And, what is shopping without a little refreshment? Try Bella Brava for lunch. It's just 2 doors down from Accents by Josie. |
